Crucible Tattoo Co. is a unique business within the tattoo industry, being the first of its kind in Australia. It has been founded, owned and run by members of the LGBTIQ community in order to meet the unique needs of artists, clients and local community members.
Since its inception in early 2015, Crucible has offered opportunities to otherwise marginalised artists, and has been instrumental in the training and induction of multiple independent LGBTIQ artists who are now well established in their field. Crucible has also offered a safe and supportive environment, as well as a secure and hygienic physical space, to our collective of independent LGBTIQ artists.
Zero Scar is the founder and owner of Crucible, and has been working in the tattoo industry since 2004. As a transgender artist, it has always been his passion and objective to support other members of the LGBTIQ community, whether they be clients, colleagues or emerging artists.
Crucible marks the evolution of this goal with the establishment of an official premises to the same end. Since the acquisition of the Kensington premises in early 2015, this space has been a safe haven for marginalised artists of diverse sexualities, genders, cultures, regional and socio-economic backgrounds.
Crucible now employs one full-time LGBTIQ staff member in the role of shop manager, in addition to Zero’s existing role. Crucible also provides a physical space for a community of independent artists to collaborate, create and share resources.
Crucible’s owner, Zero Scar, graduated in 2011 with Bachelor of Illustration and Design at NMIT, where he learned design skills relating to the production of fine art prints and photo documentation of professional works.
Crucible has and continues to support our wider community through a series of fundraisers to collect funds for various non-profit organisations supporting LGBTIQ, First Nations, and other marginalised communities.
